The Zonta Club of Houston Member Spotlight: Sally R
We are proud to shine a light on our high achieving members who have excelled at contributing to the mission of the Zonta Club of Houston and Zonta International. Zonta International, founded in 1919, is a global organization of executives and professionals working together to advance the status of women worldwide through service and advocacy. Zonta Club of Houston members contribute to this mission through our main ideals: organization, education, service, advocacy and raising funds.
Sally joined the Zonta Club of Houston in 1991. She has served as vice president, president (2 terms) and has chaired the service committee. She has also been active at the district and international level. She served at District 10 Governor 2002-2004. At the international level she has served on the Young Women in Public Affairs Committee, the Z Club and Golden Z Club Committee (chairman) for four years, was elected to the International Nominating Committee, and most recently, chaired the registration committee for the international convention that was held in San Antonio.
When asked about Zonta, Sally responded: “I can’t imagine NOT being in Zonta. The friendships that I’ve made through the years are very special to me. I know women from all over the world, not just the U.S. Our service projects have been very special to me. We have hands-on service at the local level but our contributions to the Zonta International Foundation allow us to help with projects throughout the world. Check out our current projects at www.zonta.org.
Sally’s degree is in education and she taught junior and senior high school for 10 years, 5 years in La Marque, 1 year in Iceland, 2 years in Germany and two years in Okinawa. After returning to the States she began a career in real estate sales and training and she retired from Prudential Gary Greene Realtors in December of 2011. For over 30 years she was directly involved with training new licensees at the office and company level. She was also certified as a national trainer for Prudential Real Estate Services and taught throughout the United States.
Her advice to young women entering the job market is, “Do what you love. Don’t get trapped in a job that doesn’t give you any enjoyment. Life is too short to spend it doing something you hate”. Also, she says, “Find a mentor that you trust and that will be there for you when the road gets bumpy.”
Ask her about retirement and she’ll tell you that she strongly recommends it! She is enjoying her home in La Porte seven months a year and a home in Green Valley, AZ the other five months. She plays lots of golf, volunteers at two resale shops and a dog shelter, travels, does some consulting work, and tailgates at the Texans games. When in Green Valley she attends Zonta meetings with the Zonta Club of Nogales.
